The amygdala is the brain’s emotional and fear center, located in the medial temporal lobe, with one on each side of the brain. Core functions: 1. Rapid threat detection → faster than conscious awareness 2. Processing negative emotions (mainly fear, anxiety, and anger) 3. Formation of emotional memory, especially fear conditioning 4. Recognition of facial expressions, particularly fear and anger 5. Regulation of stress responses (heart rate, sweating, etc.) Common effects: Overactivity → anxiety
