OpenAI has reached a new “partnership” worth $38 billion with Amazon Web Services (AWS) — its first ever deal with the world’s leading cloud infrastructure provider.
“Edge computing also means less data travels long distances, lowering the load on main servers and networks,” says Neel Somani. “This can reduce wait times for users watching live events, playing games, or making financial trades where every second counts.”
Despite the risk of a bubble, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Amazon plan to spend billions more on artificial intelligence than they already do.
“AWS is growing at a pace we haven’t seen since 2022, re-accelerating to 20.2% YoY,” Andy Jassy, the president and CEO of Amazon, said in the company’s earnings announcement. “We continue to see strong demand in AI and core infrastructure, and we’ve been focused on accelerating capacity — adding more than 3.8 gigawatts in the past 12 months.”
